More about Electric Guitars:
Electric
guitars
Electric guitars have been around for many
decades. The first, made back in the early 1930’s were very rudimentary modifications of acoustic guitars by
jazz musicians desperate to “up” the volume.
Indeed their concept has been developed over the
years, but still relies on that same science as long ago. A steel string vibrating over a magnet causes
electromagnetic induction and a resulting electrical signal can represent the sound. This signal is amplified,
these days by highly efficient integrated circuits, but until the 70’s valve driven amplification was used. The
sound of valve amplification is unique and valve powered amplifiers are still popular. Nowadays the electronic
amplifier is more reliable and cheaper to buy. The guitar pickup on the other hand has not advanced much beyond
better design shape and positioning.

Variety
show
The number of different color and shape designs
is immense and far outstrips the acoustic guitar market. Electric guitars are available in a multitude of
colors, often superimposed with modern art and decals. The range is immense. On-body advertising is also now
common as are “signature” versions which are usually replicas of a famous player’s favorite
axe.
Neck styles are available in a number of widths
and profiles. Headstocks on electric guitars have long since held the trademarks of the maker. In addition
headstocks are shaped either to match the body shape or to denote a particular manufacturer.
Design
options
From the classic Les-Paul shape to the well-known
flying-V, electric guitars are the powerhouse of rock music since the mid 1960’s. Until then, jazz musicians
were the most common users. The main differences in sound from electric guitars are related mostly to the pickup
design, although other factors such as wood choice also affect tonal characteristics and particularly, note
sustain. String choices can also affect tonal range. Solid-body or the jazz hollow-body style also impacts the
tone.
Pickups come basically as either ‘humbucker’
design, or ‘single-coil’. There are a bunch of variants in between that make all sorts of claims as to their
great sound – buyers must listen and choose their own favorite. Pickup positioning is important too. Strings
sound more ‘tinny’ when strummed close to the saddle, when played closer to the
fretboard, a warmer sound is produced.
Guitars with more than one pickup have them
positioned to make use of this tonal range, and a switch is usually available to choose between pickups whilst
playing.
