With
Acoustic Guitars Size matters
Huge
Classical-style often called ‘jumbo’ acoustic guitars are not really suitable for many shorter people. Their
arms may not extend properly to a good achieve a suitable hand-position over these large bodied instruments and
can cause blood flow issue as the edge presses into the inside of the elbow. Anyone looking to buy an acoustic
guitar should try the instrument out before buying, paying particular attention to discomfort.
An
instrument should feel right when held and played. Any sign of the guitar not feeling like you can use it for
lengthy practice or live use, should be noted and considered before a purchase is made. For this reason, buying
online is only a good plan where the intended model of acoustic guitar is tested before buying – possibly at a
local music store, or from a fellow player.
Large guitars on small people also have a diminutive effect on the player’s perceived height. The
converse is true for tall people playing small bodied instruments, it makes them look taller. This effect is
commonly used onstage for rock guitar players with electric guitars to enhance the stature of the guitarist.
Plenty of smaller acoustic classical guitars are available that have acceptable sound characteristics, so a
jumbo is not the only option for that style.
Dreadnoughts are by comparison a “normal size” and suit most players regardless of stature. They are
the most popular purchased shape and can be used in a huge variety of musical styles. Tonally they have full
range, as do the classical instruments.
There are a few other odd-shaped and unusual acoustics out there, but these usually have a limited
application.
So
when choosing a guitar, select one that suits the style you wish to play, and take note that size can be
everything!
